Family sessions

Preparation Is Key!

The goal is not to get a stiff and posed shot of everyone but to capture the true essence of your family.

In my approach I use my understanding of my equipment and natural light to create images that will become works of art for you to hang in your home and pass down to generations

I like to try and give you helpful tips and advice to help you when preparing for your family session.

Lifestyle photography is unique as I will not only capture what you look like at a certain point in time, I will capture who you are. My aim is to capture honest photos of you and your family.

01.

The Weather

I have been a location family photographer now for over 10 years and in that time only a handful of sessions have had to been postponed due to rain (yes, even in winter)! Obviously, it goes without saying if super wet, we can rearrange and always, always remember to dress for the time of year. Wooly hats, scarfs and wellies look just as amazing as summer dresses!

02.

Time

As all my shoots are on location, the best time of day is either in the morning or evening as the light around midday is typically too harsh. The good news is, I'm super fast! My family sessions rarely last more than 45 mins and sometimes less. Don't worry, I can easily get a diverse and adequate gallery in that time. The trick with kids (and daddies lol) is to work fast!

What To Wear

Wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. I do not recommend matching but rather co-ordinating. My advice for kids is not to make them wear something that they never would. If your little girl doesn't like to wear dresses, don't make her wear a dress. The most important thing is to just be you. I have a whole blog post dedicated to the subject so check it out, here.

04.

Location

Together we can discuss the location for your shoot. I have many locations that I love to shoot at regularly but I am always open to new locations. You should choose a location that fits your style and personalities. I can help you along in the decision.

Locations that I would work locally in regularly are Gosford Forest Park, Loughgall Country Park, Tannaghmore Gardens, Peatlands Park and Clare Glen.

Tips

Remember children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Don't worry if your child is running about or active, most of the images you see of young children on my site were captured whilst the child was busy exploring and playing. To get the family shots, I usually direct the adult to just be with the child, or hold the child and we go from there.

How to

prepare your kids?

Step 01

To make the most of your session, make sure your little one is well rested and has adequate snacks and water. We can take snack breaks and play, however I will probably still be shooting during these breaks. Bring dry, non-messy snacks so their little faces stay clean during the shoot.

Step 02

Prepare your children for the session by letting them know that a friend will be taking some photos of them, it's best not to surprise them. Tell them I'm a Mummy too (of 3) and that we are going to have an adventure. Even show them my picture!
